Septic Laterals – Did You Know

Lateral drain fields for septic systems come in several varieties. The most common kind is a geotextile-wrapped, 4-inch perforated pipe that is buried in clean aggregate. The lateral pipes carry wastewater from an aerobic treatment unit or septic tank and distribute it into the drain field. After effluent penetrates the ground, soil acts as a last line of defense, eliminating the majority of germs and viruses. Perforated pipes are swapped out for plastic chambers or tiny pressured lines, also referred to as Low-Pressure Pipe (LPP), in alternative lateral field designs. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), chamber-type gravelless drain fields have been utilized so extensively in the preceding decades that the system is now regarded as a typical lateral alternative in many states.

Under the Section 504 program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), loans and grants are available for single-family housing repairs, which may involve removing health and safety issues from an existing residence. Septic lateral drain fields and other components of an existing OWTS system may be updated or replaced using the software.
