Septic Aerobic Treatment Units – Did You Know
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), smaller-scale aerobic treatment units (ATUs) use much the same procedure as big municipal sewage treatment facilities. Compared to conventional septic tanks, ATUs generate cleaner, clearer effluent, which lessens the effect on the environment and any health risks. ATUs come in two varieties, and both provide greater sewage treatment levels. For septic systems, the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) sets standards and conducts independent testing on the aerobic treatment units. The two forms of residential ATUs that are most well-known are Standards 40 and 245. Significant reductions in total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), and better pH are required for treated wastewater that satisfies standard 40. A minimum 50% decrease in nitrogen and other enhancements to TDS and BOD are mandated by Standard 245.
Every sophisticated septic system design, including high-pressure drip systems, requires the use of aerobic treatment units. Systems that use an evaporative lagoon can also need an ATU instead of a conventional septic tank, depending on the county regulations in the area.
The Section 504 program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers grants and loans for the rehabilitation of single-family housing or for removing health and safety risks from an existing property. Aerobic treatment units and other on-site wastewater systems may be updated or replaced with the help of this program.
