EV Charging Stations – Did You Know
A level one charging cable is included with every new electric car. The disadvantage of basic units is that they take a long time to charge—usually overnight, 10 to 12 hours. Level two EV charging stations could be the best choice for consumers who need quick charges often or in an emergency. It can be necessary to install a new electrical branch circuit in a garage or house, depending on the infrastructure and wiring already in place. The electrical circuit size, installation, and protection of vehicle charging stations are governed by the National Electric Code (NEC).
Under the Alternative Fuel Refueling Property Credit section of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the federal tax credit for installing level two electric car chargers was extended until December 31, 2032. The IRS views electricity as an alternative fuel for this federal tax benefit. Consequently, if installed in a residence, EV chargers are eligible for a 30% rebate up to $1,000. See January 2022 revised IRS form 8911.
